Sharing the Message

Walpole Island First Nation Website

Objectives:

A website was developed by WIFN as a way of using modern electronic media to share and promote the message and work of the Walpole Island Heritage Centre and the community. An important focus of the website is the environmental activities of WIFN.

Description:

The website includes a range of information about the First Nation, including a detailed community profile. The website also describes the work of the Heritage Centre, including an overview of the Heritage Centre's community-based approach to research, and summaries of research papers, videos, and an index listing of all editions of the community newsletter, Nin.da.waab.jig News. Environmental issues addressed on the website include a petition in support of the principle of zero discharge related to the St. Clair River ICI Discharge; as well as full text versions of the Environmental Audit Model for First Nations, and the Waste Management Manual for First Nations. Information to be added in the near future will address on-going research projects, land claims information, and a kids page. The web site can be found at http://www.bkejwanong.com

Outcome:

The website has allowed Walpole Island to reach a broader audience, with relatively few resources.

Support:

Website information is prepared by the Heritage Centre.
