| The ten environmental projects
and activities described in this section were all developed by WIFN in response
to concerns about the land, water, air, animals and people situated within Walpole
Island territory. This broad range of activities has been supported in
the midst of constant struggles for adequate resources, and the pressure of competing
priorities for what might be seen as more basic community needs. In this regard,
these ten initiatives are a reflection of the commitment of WIFN to upholding
its responsibility to preserving and promoting its own natural heritage.
This commitment can be divided into three categories: - A commitment
to improving the community's understanding of its environment
- A commitment
to actively protecting and restoring the environment
- A commitment to educating
the community about good environmental behaviour
As will be seen in Chapter 4, this commitment also strengthens WIFN's cause in
addressing external environmental problems by demonstrating to outsiders that
the First Nation is serious about the environment.
