Ontario Roundtable on the Environment and Economy
Native People's Circle on Environment and Development

Objectives:

WIFN's objectives were to provide its perspective on sustainable development, and to assist in the formulation of a native peoples position.

Description:

Establishment of the Native People's Circle on Environment and Development, and preparation of a final report on ways aboriginal people can develop strong local economies, preserve the environment, and participate more fully in decisions which affect their communities . The Native People's Circle was established to provide an aboriginal perspective on sustainable development. The Executive Director of the Heritage Centre acted as Circle member and Liaison to the Round Table.

The report was sent to all members of the Round Table, and has subsequently been circulated to a wide audience.

Outcome:

Through its participation in the Roundtable, WIFN was able to share its unique approach to environmental management with a far broader audience. In the wake of the Roundtable report, a newspaper article was headlined,"Walpole Deemed Environmental Example to Follow."

Support:

The Roundtable was supported by the Ontario Government.
