represents a massive compilation undertaken by the late Canadian artist, Greg
Curnoe, of the First Nations' leaders and individual who negotiated and signed
the various land surrenders for southwestern Ontario, and shaped the 18th and
19th century history of the region. Curnoe's exhaustive research of the primary
documents, local histories and Native oral traditions has led to the creation
of a manuscript which takes these individuals and the communities they represent
from the obscurity they had been relegated to by traditional Canadian history,
and sheds light on their very key and central role in the shaping of Ontario's
past. The end result is a book that introduces the reader to these individuals,
offers insight into how their communities were structured socially and politically,
and provides a greater understanding of how they interacted with the British,
French and Americans." Staff at Walpole Island Heritage Centre
have abstracted all the references to Walpole Island inhabitants
in this comprehensive and unique history. | |
