Alternatives to Household Hazardous Waste

When shopping try to avoid products with these hazardous symbols:

Below. is a list of alternative recipes that can be used in place of your. regular household cleaner/product. Most of these recipes are made with a combination of. the following ingredients:

* borax * hydrogen peroxide * ammonia * lemon juice * club soda * baking soda * salt * pure soap * powder * vinegar

Kitchen Cleaner Alternatives

Laundry and Stain Removers

Walls, Floor and Furniture Cleaners

Bathroom Cleaners

Metal Cleaners

Misc. Product Alternatives

Paint Alternatives

Pest Control and Garden Sprays

There are a few reasons behind replacing your household cleaners with these alternatives.
First of all, they can reduce the amount of "cleaner clutter" under many sinks, since many of the same ingredients are used in a number of different alternative recipes.
Second, you are reducing the. amount of waste that is created by buying household products.

Third, you can save money – the alternative ingredients cost much less than the prepared products you get at your local grocery store. Also, if you buy in bulk you can save extra – the amount you would have paid for packaging.

And ultimately, THESE ALTERNATIVES CAUSE LESS STRAIN -ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN HEALTH. Many cleaners, even if they are biodegradable, cause some harm the the environment – be it in the manufacture of these products,.using them in your home, or if t;hey are improperly disposed of in a landfill site (they can leak into the ground water and marshes). For instance, did-U-know that chlorine bleach is a known carcinogen (cancer-causing agent)? It can get into the human body through ingestation, inhalation & through skin absorption?!!

WORDS OF WARNING

Use borax, ammonia and hydrogen peroxide only for difficult cleaning jobs – they are more toxic than the other alternatives.

Protect yourself when using these three cleaners by wearing gloves and working in a well- ventilated room. Further, you should watch your children and small pets as they will be effected first.

Wear gloves and old, loose clothing to protect your skin.

Never mix ammonia (or vinegar) with chlorine bleach as they create a deadly gas)
