Reducing Your Waste

IMPROVING TRANSPORTATION EFFICIENCY
Driving A Car - Earth Wise Driving Tips

Saving Your Fuel

  • Avoid Idling your engine.
  • Turn off lights when you leave the room.
  • Never accelerate the engine before shutting off the motor because it waste gas and may drop raw gas on the cylinder walls which can lead to engine wear.
  • The weight of unnecessary items in your trunk wastes gas.
  • Try to drive at a steady speed. It takes a lot less gas than starting from a complete stop.
  • Watch your speed; save yourself a speeding ticket.
  • Reduce aerodynamic drag by removing your roof rack.
  • Jack rabbit starts can use up to 50% more gas, and lead to transmission wear.
  • Car or van pool whenever possible.

Road Surfaces

  • You use less fuel on smooth roads than rough roads.
  • Remove wet snow from your car: it adds extra weight.
  • In winter, drive in ruts so that you are not pushing snow out of the way.

Tires

  • Tires should be properly inflated.

Oil Changes
To ensure that the oil from your car does not end up in our rivers and lakes, you should either take your used oil to a garage that accepts it for recycling (if you change it yourself) or if you have your oil changed at a garage, make sure they recycle their oil, anti-freeze and freon.

Car / Marine Batteries
If not properly disposed of, car batteries can be quite hazardous to the environment and you. Car or marine batteries should always be brought to a place that recycles them.
