Protecting The Environment

Reducing Your Waste

The Three R's Consist of Recycling, Reducing and Reusing.

RECYCLING

RECYCLING is a very common and widely used type of earth saving measure. Recycling means taking the old things or previously used, items and making new products out of the old, whether using part or all of the old product. Today many individuals, households, offices, schools and whole towns or communities participate in a recycling program. Through recycling you can save natural resources', protect wildlife, reduce land use by reducing landfill volumes, reduce pollution, save energy and create new jobs.
  • 1. Compost
  • 2. Leave grass clippings on the. lawn
  • 3. Use your blue box or your igloo
  • 4. Use your local transfer station

REDUCING

The second R is REDUCE. To reduce means to cut down on your present usage of items. You may or may not realize it but we buy and consume things that are unnecessary and uneconomical. To reduce means not to do without, but to be a smarter and wiser consumer. Below is a reducing checklist; do you:

  • 1. Buy products .that have little.or no packaging.
  • 2. Bring your own reusable bags to the store when you make purchases.
  • 3. Buy in bulk.
  • 4. Buy perishable goods in small quantities.
  • 5. Avoid buyinq food and beverages in single serving/individually wrapped containers.
  • 6. Buy items in returnable containers.
  • 7. Buy non-disposable items (eg. pens, lighters)
  • 8. Use washable dishes and cutlery instead of using plastic and paper.
  • 9. Rent or share with neighbours items that are seldom used.
  • 10 Buy products that are durable,long lasting and easily serviced.
  • 11. Avoid buying products where the packaging is made up of two composite materials (eg. bubble packs and plastic).
  • 12. Talk to retailers abaut excess packaging.
  • 13. Demonstrate concern for over packaging by refusing to purchase items or leaving the excess packaging at. the store.
  • 14. Buy environmentally friendly products.
  • 15. Use both sides of paper before recycling.
  • 16. Buy stamps in strips not pre-packaged.

REUSE

Last but not least, is REUSE. To reuse is the act of using things over and over again and then maybe even finding additional uses for the same item after they have served their original purpose. Below is a reuse checklist, do you:

  • 1. Buy previously used items such as books, clothing and furniture.
  • 2. Use both sides of paper for notes.
  • 3. Reuse envelopes.
  • 4. Wash out, milk bags. and use them for storage.
  • 5. Reuse glass jars and plastic bags for home storage.
  • 6. Bring your own mug, dishes and utensils to office meetings or fast food restaurants where disposables are used.
  • 7. Repair small and large appliances.
  • 8. Mend clothing and repair shoes.
