LAUNDRY AND STAIN REMOVERS

Laundry

Laundry Detergent:
Use 1/3 cup of washing soda or 1/2 cup of soap powder in place of detergent. Add to hot water while washing machine is filling and add clothes after fully dissolved. If water is hard, add another 1/4 cup of washing soda. Make a paste of washing soda and water for dirty spots.

Bleach Substitute:
Borax;

OR
1/2 cup sodium hexametaphosphate (ask your pharmacist) per 5 gallons (20 litres) of water.

Anti-Static Agents:
Static builds up in the dryer when the clothes become too dry. Remove clothes when they are "damp dry" and hang them out or put a damp towel in when drying lighter items.

Fabric Softeners:
Add 1/4 cup of baking soda to the washing machine as it is filling.

STAIN REMOVAL

Instead of using enzyme pre-soaks and bleach for those tough laundry stains, the following can be used. If the items starts to discolour after application, neutralize immediately. Remember acids (lemon juice and vinegar) will neutralize alkalis, such as baking soda and ammonia, and vice versa. Wash after application.

Heavy Soils:
Rub with solution of 2 Tbsp. washing soda in 1/4 cup of warm water.

Soiled Diapers:
Presoak in 45 ml. baking soda dissolved in warm water in either tub or washing machine.

Fruit and Wine:
Immediately pour salt or hot water on the stain and soak in milk before washing.

Grease:
Pour boiling water on stains and follow with dry baking soda;

OR try ammonia and water.

Ink:
Soak in cold water or remove with hydrogen peroxide;

OR Try rubbing the spot with unsalted fat (lard) then wash with soapy water; If the garment is made with polyester, squirt hair spray on the spot then rinse.

Blood:
Soak in cold water or remove with 6 hydrogen peroxide. For a more stubborn stain, mix cornstarch, talcum powder or cornmeal with water and apply the mixture. Allow to dry and brush away.

Coffee:
Mix egg yolk with lukewarm water and rub on stain.

Chewing Gum:
Rub with ice. Gum will flake off.

Lipstick:
Rub with cold cream or shortening and wash with washing soda.

Rust:
Saturate with sour milk (or lemon juice) and rub with salt. Place in direct sunlight until dry, then wash.

Mildew:
Pour strong soap and salt on the spots and place in sunlight. Keep spots moist and repeat as often as necessary.

Scorches:

Boil scorched article in 1 cup of soap and 4 cups of milk.

Berries:
Soak in vinegar.

Butter:
Rub with a paste of washing soda and water.

Chocolate:
Rub with a paste. of washing soda and water.

Crayons:
Rub with toothpaste.

Decals:
Rub with vinegar or vegetable oil.

Egg:
Wash in cold water;

Grass:
Soak in vinegar or strong alcohol and water.

Machine Oil:
Scrub with washing soda and water.

Mustard:
Rub with vegetable glycerine soap.

Nail Polish:
Rub with alcohol.

Oil:
Wipe with vegetable oil (oil draws out oil).

Paint:
Soak in hot vinegar or washing soda and water.

Shellac:
Wipe with alcohol.

Stains:
Rub with a paste of washing soda and water.
