KITCHEN CLEANER ALTERNATIVES

KITCHEN CLEANERS

Dishes:
Pour 1 Tbsp of pure soap powder under running water to fill sink.

Pots and Pans:
Pour 1 Tbsp of washing soda in with the pure soap and water. Roasting pans will be easier to clean if you flll it with water, add an S.O.S pad and boil on your stove.

Silverware:
Can be cleaned by bringing a pot of water to a.boil on the stove, with a S.O.S. pad in it. Add your silverware or stainless steel cutlery to the pot and boil for 5 more minutes. Rinse with warm water and dry with a towel. It will make them sparkle!

Greasy Water:

Add 1-3 Tbsp of vinegar.

Automatic Dishwashers:
Use 2 part Borax in every 2 weeks or so.

Garbage Odours:
Sprinkle some baking soda or zeolite on top of garbage to help control bad odours.

Cleanser (porcelain cleaners):
Dip damp cloth in baking soda and rub over stains. You can also make a paste with water and apply it to especially stained surfaces. Allow to set before rubbing clean and rinsing.

Drain Cleaner:
Use plunger or mechanical snake;

OR plug overflow drains with cloths, and run a garden hose into plugged drains, holding cloths around the hose to form a tight seal and hold. Have someone turn on hose water, the pressure will clear blockage;

OR 1-2 handfuls (about 1 cup) baking soda, 1/2 cup vinegar, allow to set for 1 hour, run warm water- Prevent clogging by using a drain strainer;

OR
flush drain weekly with boiling water for prevention.

Oven Cleaner:
Sprinkle salt on spills when they are warm and scrub;

OR
mix 3,Tbsp washing soda with one quart warm water;

OR rub gently with steel wool;

OR sprinkle with baking soda then rinse with water. Use oven liners (trays) to catch spills.

Refrigerators/Freezers:
A box of baking soda in each will help keep it smelling fresh. When you change your box of baking soda, you can pour the old one down the drain (with hot water) to keep clear.

Countertop:
Freshly squeezed lemon juice will clean and remove any stains from countertops. Allow the juice to sit for 45 minutes then sprinkle on baking soda and clean with a soft cloth. Club soda can also clean countertop. Rinse well and wipe dry.

Coffeemaker:
Clean automatic coffeemakers by running full strength white vinegar through the cycle. Rinse a couple of times with water.

Kettle:
Pour a solution of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water in kettle and let it boil. Rinse thoroughly.

GENERAL CLEANERS

General Cleaner:
Mix baking soda with water;

OR mix 3 Tbsp of washing soda with one quart warm water.

All Purpose Cleaner:
Mix together; 125 ml (1/2 cup) ammonia 75 ml (1/3 cup) washing soda, 4 litres (3 1/2 quarts) warm water;

OR
250 ml (1 cup) ammonia, 125 ml(l/2 cup) white vinegar, 50 ml (1/4 cup) baking soda, and 4 litres (3 1/2 quarts) warm water. Both these cleaners can be used on floors, countertops, tiles and wall. Rinse all surfaces with clean water.

Window Cleaner:
Mix 1/2 cup white vinegar with one gallon warm water;

OR
for a smaller portion, mix 2 Tbsp vinegar in 1.1 litres of water in an empty spray bottle;

OR use newspapers to dry the glass;

OR use straight lemon juice and dry with a soft cloth.

Use 1/3 cup of washing soda or 1/2 cup of soap powder in place of detergent. Add to hot water while washing machine is filling and add clothes after fully dissolved. If water is hard, add another 1/4 cup of washing soda. Make a paste of washing soda and water for dirty spots. Borax;

OR 1/2 cup sodium hexametaphosphate (ask your pharmacist) per 5 gallons (20 litres) of water.
